This article examines the need to increase teachers of color in, both urban and suburban, K-12 public schools. First the author examines the historical shift from a large percentage of teachers of color (pre-Brown vs. The Board of Education) to the current trend of an ever decreaseing number of African American teachers. The article discusses the various benefits to both communities in increasing the number of teachers of color, but also the complexities associated with the recruitment and hiring of teachers of color. Additionally the article highlights various difficulties to the retainment of teachers of color.
