I wholeheartedly agree with the need to increase the number of teachers of color in both urban, but also suburban schools. Minority students in suburban schools may be isolated because of a lack of access to not only minority peers, but minority teachers as well.
Let’s not forget the importance of serving as role models for non-minority students who because of their lack of contact with Black America fall prey to the abundant stereotypes found throughout media outlets about what it means to be Black. Additionally, how do we stop minority teachers from leaving? One way is to start listening to the experiences of teachers of color teaching in both urban and suburban environments.
